taste is a muscle

in consumer, taste is one of the most important traits to have. unlimited resources, capital, and talent won't save a product built by someone without it. some argue taste can't be learned. that it's innate. but taste isn't a fixed trait—it's a muscle. it atrophies without use. it strengthens with repetition. taste is about what gets consumed. not passively, but actively. it means having a pulse on the algorithm. knowing which one-liners will go viral before they do. sensing which ideas will resonate and which will fall flat. it's understanding what invokes strong emotion and what's merely pleasant. what tells a story versus what makes that story inherently understood without explanation. taste means understanding that interfaces aren't experiences. a beautiful UI with no soul is just decoration. taste is knowing the difference between something that looks good and something that feels right. how taste is built: - consumption with intention. most people scroll. few people study. taste comes from paying attention to why something works, not just that it works. - pattern recognition across domains. the best consumer builders pull from film, fashion, architecture, music. taste isn't siloed. what makes a movie scene memorable applies to what makes an onboarding flow memorable. - repetition through creation. taste sharpens fastest through making things and watching how people react. ship, observe, repeat. - editing ruthlessly. taste isn't about adding—it's about knowing what to remove. the discipline to kill something that's good but not right. the problem with taste is it can't be hired for. a founder without taste can't evaluate whether a designer has it. they'll optimize for polish over resonance. they'll ship something "clean" that no one remembers. this is why so many well-funded consumer startups fail. they have the resources to build anything. but resources don't buy intuition. capital doesn't buy the ability to feel what others will feel. taste is also temporal. what worked last year won't work next year. the muscle has to stay active. stop consuming, stop creating, and the instinct dulls. the good news: it can be developed. but it requires treating it like training. daily reps. constant exposure. relentless attention to detail. taste isn't about being an artist. it's about being a student of what moves people—and never stopping.
